The Land: with Jerry Apps (WPT Documentary, November, 2015).

In his first two PBS specials, historian Jerry Apps explored his childhood and country winters - from the Great Depression to World War II - in Waushara County through personal memories and photos from the Wild Rose community. Now, Apps reaches forward, looking ahead by sharing his passion for the land.

Join acclaimed Wisconsin author and historian Jerry Apps on a walk through the seasons with his grandsons, as he passes along lessons that can be gleaned from listening to The Land. With a wit and wisdom inherited from his father on their central Wisconsin farm, Apps recalls stories that unite the generations by informing a shared appreciation for the world around us. A companion to Whispers and Shadows: A Naturalist’s Memoir, Apps’ new book from the Wisconsin Historical Society Press, The Land follows the popular Jerry Apps: A Farm Story and A Farm Winter. Jerry Apps: A Farm Story (WPT Documentary, November, 2012).

The portrait of a farm boy's childhood in Waushara County is told through his personal memories and photos from the community. Apps evokes memories of a time when almost as many Americans lived on farms as in cities, and examines day-to-day rural life. Fieldwork was done with horses, cows were milked by hand, lanterns were the source of light, and community was essential for survival.
